  • Portraits of Tucson, Arizona (watercolor by Wanderlust Designer)

On Location: Portraits of Tucson, Arizona

With a population of over a half million people, there is definitely no shortage of portraits to be painted in Tucson, Arizona. Even with a burgeoning number of inhabitants, to a non-desert dweller, I was drawn (literally) to create portraits of the other population in Tucson, the cacti! The majestic saguaro cactus is hard to miss around town. Not only are they quite tall (some can grow to be over 70 feet tall), but they also could easily hold the title for most recognizable icon of the Wild West. Ironically they do not grow throughout the West, but Tucson is lucky to be one of the few regions it thrives. In fact, it is so prevalent in…

  • The Wild West by Wanderlust Designer

Free Printable Vintage Wild West Post Card

If you’ve ever seen a satellite image of the US at night, it’s clear to see why they call the western portion of America the “wild west.” The Eastern seaboard is light up like a Christmas tree with city lights. The West coast (Los Angeles and San Francisco) is just as bright, but head east of California’s central valley and west of St. Louis, and there sure is a lot of wide open space! In the spirit of the rugged wild west, I’ve made a free printable vintage-style post card based on one of the images I took in Southern Utah along the Colorado river. I’d imagine if I were…

  • Wild West Riding Adventure in Utah by Wanderlust Designer

Time+Place: Wild West Horseback Riding in Utah

It was a gorgeous summer afternoon in Southern Utah. The rusted reds in the sandstone cliffs reverberated against the cerulean blue skies. We got on our horses, left the stables of the resort, and slowly moseyed up the mountain side away from the mighty Colorado River. Within minutes the only sounds we could hear were the hoofs of our horses trundling up the rocky trail. With each step, it felt like we were heading back in time– straight into an old western movie. There is nothing like the landscape of the American Southwest. The sandstone buttes jutting out from the desert landscape is an iconic scene in almost any Western…

  • Rocky Mountain High in Fairplay, Colorado by Wanderlust Designer

On Location: Rocky Mountain High – Solitude at 10,000′ in Fairplay Colorado

Past bustling Frisco, Colorado, through the ski town of Breckenridge and over 11,542′ Hoosier Pass lies the little town of Fairplay, Colorado. Situated on a high grassland basin known as South Park (yes, the South Park… more on this later), you definitely get the feeling that John Denver must have visited Fairplay before he wrote his famous ballad, Rocky Mountain High. There are the “cathedral mountains” and the “silver clouds”, there’s the starlight sky, and the streams. But most of all I found the “quiet solitude.” Perhaps the solitude was unique to when I visited, I can’t be sure, but this small town of less than 700 people, situated in…

somewhere on 1-80 in the middle of Nevada... Some somewhere on 1-80 in the middle of Nevada... Some may find this stretch of highway incredibly tedious- but for some reason I find it bubbling with wonder. The puffy clouds, the dancing tumble weed, the stark mountains, the long ribbon of highway, and the the subtle color palette that slowly changes as the sun moves across the sky- Driving through northern Nevada really gives a perspective of just how empty, vast and wild the west really is. Have you driven this stretch of road before? What did you think? #roadtrip #wanderlust #wildwest #nevada #nevadadesert #painterlypainting #roadtripmemories

It’s tracked down to the day, even hour when it It’s tracked down to the day, even hour when it is at its absolute peak. People travel for miles, if not around the world to see them. There are live webcams, parties, picnics and milestone events planned for this event. What am I talking about, you ask? Cherry blossom season of course!

There is something quite charming that in this day and age people can work up such a fevor for something as simple and natural as cherry blossom trees in bloom. It’s not as if it won’t happen… every year… it is guaranteed! Yet, I find this enthusiasm is so refreshing!

Washington D.C. and Japan are definitely top of mind when I think of cherry blossoms, but did you know that on the University of Washington’s campus in Seattle, there is the same celebration going on? 30 Yoshino cherry trees were brought to UW in 1939 and initially planted in Washington Park Arboretum. They were moved to the Quad on campus in 1962. The number of trees in the quad has more than doubled since then, and truly is a spectacular site up against the gothic-style architecture.

Be sure to head to the internet and google one of the live webcams so you can see the show! And, of course, make sure you have a copy of my Wanderlust Guide Seattle book to tell you more creative details about the beautiful UW campus and U District in Seattle. @westmarginpress

I miss creating daily art. Not sure why this habit I miss creating daily art. Not sure why this habit I love has disappeared for awhile but going to start to work on bringing it back- even if it’s just a 5 min sketch! I found this site called randomstreetview.com that basically just shows exactly that - a random street in the world. Here’s a quick painterly landscape I created of Ordino, Andorra! Do you know of other sites like this that give different glimpses of the world? #dailyartpractice #painterlypractice #wanderlust #streetsoftheworld #andorra

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Lawrence F I am saddened to hear of the passing of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet, artist, publisher and champion to Beatniks everywhere! In 1953, he and Peter Martin opened City Lights Pocket Book Shop in North Beach, San Francisco creating a haven for like minded individuals to explore, read, and publish creative works outside the norm for the time.

His bookstore and North Beach were a huge influence for me in creating my Wanderlust Guides! It’s stories like his, the history it created and the creative vibe that can be discovered there even today when wandering this neighborhood that I just love. For anyone exploring the streets of San Francisco, a visit to City Lights Booksellers is a must. With my Wanderlust San Francisco book handy, you can even try your hand at writing some Beat poetry!😎 @westmarginpress #riplawrenceferlinghetti #beats #beatniks #poetry #northbeach #sanfrancisco #wanderlustguide #wanderlustsanfrancisco #citylightsbookstore
