I dream of traveling to India one day to soak up the colors, landmarks, symbols, and motifs of this culturally rich and diverse country. From the Pink City of Jaipur to the Taj Mahal in Agra, the visual feast of patterns is incredible. Inspired by stories I’ve heard, I created this Exotic India collection to celebrate this beautiful place in the world. Wanderlust Patterns: Alluring Istanbul Collection

Istanbul, Turkey is one of my most favorite cities in the world. The “East meets West” concept is so incredibly alluring. By just driving over the famed Bosphorus Bridge, one can be transported from the continent of Europe to the continent of Asia! This bridging concept runs much deeper than just the  driving across a river, though. The East/West connection can be seen in the art, architecture, culture and warm hospitality of its inhabitants. I enjoyed creating these Istanbul illustrations and patterns and capturing this spectacular city. From the signature Turkish tile seen throughout the buildings and mosques to precious floral details, I’ve highlighting the vivid colors, motifs and architecture…

    Wanderlust Patterns: Paris Floral Collection

Paris is so iconic. From the Eiffel Tower to the cafe chairs, I love how a city can be represented by just a few simple line drawings. How in the instant you see the drawing, you know exactly where you are. I created this Paris Floral collection with this notion in mind. When ever I’ve visited Paris, I can spend many days just wandering the streets, snapping pictures of decorative windows, lamp posts, mansard roofs and gargoyles. Add some fanciful florals that you might see in Luxembourg Gardens, at Marché aux Fleurs (Paris Bird Market), or in a simple window box and voila, beautiful Paris! If you are interested in…

    Wanderlust Patterns: Bella Italia Collection

I have yet to meet someone who has traveled to Italy and hasn’t fallen in love with the country. Whether it’s the incredible Italian food, the enchanting piazzas, the historic sites, the Mediterranean cypress blowing in the breeze, or just the earth-toned patina that graces every wall and building, there is lots to love in Italy. Here is a collection of patterns and illustrations I created, called Bella Italia, that celebrate the good life in Italy! Wanderlust Patterns: Swedish Folk Collection

Before we went to Sweden, I took in as many books and stories as I could about Swedish culture. Immersing myself in all-things-Swedish really got me excited to explore the country and see if what I had read had merit. One book I read talked about some Swedish folk traditions that I couldn’t wait to draw, the dala horse, love spoons and the traditional folk art style known as kurbits. I loved learning the history of these Swedish art forms. Here are some high level details of each folk tradition I drew below. Kurbits is a form of folk style ornamental painting originating in Dalarna, Sweden. Initially Kurbits motifs were…

    Wanderlust Patterns: Camping Adventure

Summertime is made for camping! I’m lucky enough to have grown up and lived in some amazing areas in the West coast that offer incredible camping experiences. From sleeping under the tall redwoods of Northern California, to camping by a lake in the Sierras, there are just too many camping opportunities to list! To share my love for camping in the outdoors, I created this camping collection – a playful, hand drawn group of patterns and illustrations filled with iconography of the camping world, from wood textures to topo maps. If you are interested in licensing the illustrations or patterns in this collection, please contact me for details.

The towns along the Italian coast are unforgettable. Houses in a harmony of pinks, corals, rusts and golds dot the hillsides and overlook the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. How absolutely dreamy! I created this Coasta Italia collection of illustrations and patterns to celebrate the uniqueness and beauty of this little part of the world. Wanderlust Patterns: Mexican Florals

I just love Mexican floral embroidery. The patterns are always so colorful and playful. It almost feels as if the patterns mirror a fiesta! I enjoyed creating this Mexican floral pattern inspired by all those colorful embroidered blouses and dresses. I added a few Aztec-like symbols for added amusement. I could see these patterns strewn across a couch to brighten any room! If you are interested in licensing the illustrations or patterns in this collection, please contact me for details.

    Wanderlust Patterns: Tropical Paradise

Tropical leaves and birds are quite popular right now in textiles, home goods and even clothing. I enjoyed creating a collection of patterns and illustrations in line with this trend. It’s hard to deny the bold patterns, and burst of colors these designs can bring to a space. Of course, this collection is perfect for the summer season, but I can only imagine the smile on one’s face this imagery would bring in the dead of winter. There’s nothing like dreaming of the tropics all year long! If you are interested in licensing the illustrations or patterns in this collection, please contact me for details.

59 years ago today, the 1962 World’s Fair called 59 years ago today, the 1962 World’s Fair called the Century 21 Exposition opened in Seattle. The goal was to showcase science and technology of the United States in a Jet Age world, and Seattle being the center of airplane and jet innovation was the natural host. The fair sported futuristic designs, most notable being Seattle’s famed symbol, the Space Needle. Like all great designs, the original proposal for the structure was first drawn on a placemat. The crude drawing was then taken by architect John Graham, Jr. and his team and was significantly revised into the 605’ needle seen today. It was built in less than a year and remains one of the top attractions to see in the city. somewhere on 1-80 in the middle of Nevada... Some somewhere on 1-80 in the middle of Nevada... Some may find this stretch of highway incredibly tedious- but for some reason I find it bubbling with wonder. The puffy clouds, the dancing tumble weed, the stark mountains, the long ribbon of highway, and the the subtle color palette that slowly changes as the sun moves across the sky- Driving through northern Nevada really gives a perspective of just how empty, vast and wild the west really is. Have you driven this stretch of road before? What did you think? #roadtrip #wanderlust #wildwest #nevada #nevadadesert #painterlypainting #roadtripmemories

It’s tracked down to the day, even hour when it It’s tracked down to the day, even hour when it is at its absolute peak. People travel for miles, if not around the world to see them. There are live webcams, parties, picnics and milestone events planned for this event. What am I talking about, you ask? Cherry blossom season of course!

There is something quite charming that in this day and age people can work up such a fevor for something as simple and natural as cherry blossom trees in bloom. It’s not as if it won’t happen… every year… it is guaranteed! Yet, I find this enthusiasm is so refreshing!

Washington D.C. and Japan are definitely top of mind when I think of cherry blossoms, but did you know that on the University of Washington’s campus in Seattle, there is the same celebration going on? 30 Yoshino cherry trees were brought to UW in 1939 and initially planted in Washington Park Arboretum. They were moved to the Quad on campus in 1962. The number of trees in the quad has more than doubled since then, and truly is a spectacular site up against the gothic-style architecture.

Be sure to head to the internet and google one of the live webcams so you can see the show! And, of course, make sure you have a copy of my Wanderlust Guide Seattle book to tell you more creative details about the beautiful UW campus and U District in Seattle. @westmarginpress
