  • Gulliver's Corn Illustrated Recipe by Wanderlust Designer

Culture: Food – Gulliver’s Corn Illustrated Recipe

One of my family’s favorite Thanksgiving dishes is Gulliver’s Corn.  It’s a creamy, cheesy corn dish that is always scraped clean by the end of the meal. I first learned about the recipe from a Thanksgiving cooking class I took with my sisters and mom. I had no idea the origin of the recipe, but that Thanksgiving, we cooked the dish and it hasn’t left the menu since! It turns out the recipe originated from a restaurant in Southern California called Gulliver’s. It’s an old fashioned prime rib house, modeled after an old English roadside inn, one that would have been the perfect spot for someone like Lemuel Gulliver (from…

  • Injera from Ethiopia by Wanderlust Designer

    Culture: Food – Ethiopian Injera

If you haven’t had Ethiopian food, you are in for an incredible treat. Not only is it rich with flavors and spices and but often it is served with (or on top of) a spongy bread called injera. This slightly sour bread is filled with holes, so the sauces and flavors from the stews and dishes soak into it for added deliciousness. And the best part, injera is also your utensil for eating your meal! You just rip a piece off from the large platter and scoop up the various dishes served on top. Injera is made from a grain called teff. This small, round grain is found throughout Ethiopia and…

Culture – Food: Chakalaka from South Africa

Chakalaka is a staple vegetable and bean dish from the townships of South Africa. I read that this dish was developed by men working in goldmines. It is now practically a required dish to serve at a South African barbecues called a braais. Chakalaka Recipe Below are a few links to different Chakalaka recipes. Each of them vary just slightly, but in general remain consistent with the main ingredients of tomatoes, carrots, peppers, beans, chilies, onions and curry powder. • Brazilian Tempero Baiano Spice Mix Illustrated Recipe by Wanderlust Designer

Culture: A World of Flavors – Brazilian Tempero Baiano Spice Mix

Brazil’s rich and varied cuisine is a reflection of its native and immigrant population and long history of colonialism and slavery. Many European nations including Portugal, Spain, Netherlands and France at one point colonized a portion of Brazil. Slavery became such a huge business, that by 1888, almost 40% of all the African slaves brought to the new world were in Brazil. The indigenous people of Brazil had many trials and tribulations as well. Nearly faced with extinction from new diseases brought over from Europe, they were also enslaved with the Africans under colonial leaders. This mixture of cultures and people from Europe and Africa influenced the flavors of Brazil’s delicious cuisine. One of…

A summer breeze coming from the Mediterranean cools us as we sit on the terrace reminiscing about our day boating around Capri. The sun is just beginning to set and the heat of the day is subsiding. It’s time to pour a delicious glass of wine and enjoy a light meal – a Caprese salad reminiscent of the Italian flag! If you can’t get to Capri, bring home these delicious tastes of Italy by making a Caprese Salad at home. This salad one of those easy go-to recipes that make it feel like a Capri summer day all year long! The recipe couldn’t be simpler. • Eat Drink Travel - Beignets in New Orleans by Wanderlust Designer

Culture: Food – Beignets in New Orleans

There’s no doubt– a trip to New Orleans just isn’t complete without at least one fluffy, powdered sugar covered beignet and bitter cup of chicory coffee. This signature treat of New Orleans is served in many restaurants across the city, but the true place to experience this is to take a pilgrimage to the famed Cafe du Monde located at the corner of Jackson Square and just a stones throw from the Mississippi River. Beignets are best served at breakfast time, but also can make a delicious desert. If your a morning person, I suggest waking up relatively early and heading out on a vigorous walk through the French quarter (this is also…

  • Irish Pickling Spice Mix Recipe by Wanderlust Designer

Culture: A World of Flavors – Irish Pickling Spice Mix Recipe

The art of pickling foods has been around for over 4000 years. The process has been instrumental in history by providing a way to preserve foods for longer periods of time yet also gives rich flavors to otherwise common foods. This cooking method allows for meats and/or vegetables to be eaten on long journeys. This was especially common during sea exploring days and/or times of war. During both World Wars, corned (or salted) beef that was then pickled was very popular because of both meat rationing and long months at sea. Corned Beef made in Ireland was heavily traded from the 1600’s through the 1800’s. It was a high priced exported commodity that ironically not…

Culture: A World of Flavors – Moroccan Spice Mix

From the pungent odor of the leather tannery, to a serene mosque decorated with intricate tile work, wandering through the old medina in Fes was a feast for my senses. My trip to Morocco was a whirlwind, but I will never forget the experiences I had that day while exploring this historic area of the city. We dutifully visited a rug shop, and watched leather be dropped into antiquated vats of dye. I peaked into shops and was decorated with a gorgeous henna design on my hand. But like most experiences while traveling, it was the flavorful lunch that is etched so vividly in my mind. After we dined on an aromatic tajine, I…

Culture: Churrasco in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On our last night in Rio we went to one of Brazil’s famous churrasco restaurants for Brazilian BBQ. We came to the conclusion that this type of restaurant would be a vegetarian’s nightmare! We picked a lively spot on the Copacabana, recommended by our hotel. The bright place had a modern interior, filled with tile mirrors and long communal tables.  Upbeat dance music played loudly in the background. The place was crowded and it was still early. The instance we sat down, the food started pouring out of the kitchen, plate after plate. First up was some light appetizers – hearts of palm, cheese, olives, bread, and tomatoes. Then came…

It’s tracked down to the day, even hour when it It’s tracked down to the day, even hour when it is at its absolute peak. People travel for miles, if not around the world to see them. There are live webcams, parties, picnics and milestone events planned for this event. What am I talking about, you ask? Cherry blossom season of course!

There is something quite charming that in this day and age people can work up such a fevor for something as simple and natural as cherry blossom trees in bloom. It’s not as if it won’t happen… every year… it is guaranteed! Yet, I find this enthusiasm is so refreshing!

Washington D.C. and Japan are definitely top of mind when I think of cherry blossoms, but did you know that on the University of Washington’s campus in Seattle, there is the same celebration going on? 30 Yoshino cherry trees were brought to UW in 1939 and initially planted in Washington Park Arboretum. They were moved to the Quad on campus in 1962. The number of trees in the quad has more than doubled since then, and truly is a spectacular site up against the gothic-style architecture.

Be sure to head to the internet and google one of the live webcams so you can see the show! And, of course, make sure you have a copy of my Wanderlust Guide Seattle book to tell you more creative details about the beautiful UW campus and U District in Seattle. @westmarginpress

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Lawrence F I am saddened to hear of the passing of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet, artist, publisher and champion to Beatniks everywhere! In 1953, he and Peter Martin opened City Lights Pocket Book Shop in North Beach, San Francisco creating a haven for like minded individuals to explore, read, and publish creative works outside the norm for the time.

His bookstore and North Beach were a huge influence for me in creating my Wanderlust Guides! It’s stories like his, the history it created and the creative vibe that can be discovered there even today when wandering this neighborhood that I just love. For anyone exploring the streets of San Francisco, a visit to City Lights Booksellers is a must. Time to get a little personal... for many of us ou Time to get a little personal... for many of us out there, staring down at a scale ranks up there with tooth extraction, just something we don’t want to have to deal with!! For almost a decade now if I really think about it, not counting that one 4 month stretch about 4 years ago, I have been avoiding this view. Yes, I’ve known my weight is not ideal. I have gone to doctor appointments and seen first hand what the scale looked like, but quickly let that image go once I left their office!

Long story short - NOW is the time. I’m a middle aged woman of pretty good health I’d say except for my weight, but lately (as in the last few years) I’ve been feeling my age more. Aches and pains where I didn’t used to have them. One could easily chalk this up to, well, AGE, because that does happen, but my stiffness, lack of the ability to stretch and just plain aching back was getting out of hand. I’m too young for this. After all, the 50s are the new 30s, right?

So fast forward to 2021... and I finally have said, enough is enough. After dealing with my 40s plagued with migraines (20-25 headache days a month) I’m seeing that subside (yay!) and ready to tackle my weight. I’m happy to report I am already 20lbs lighter!! 🎉. Hard work does pay off. I have a much, much longer road ahead, as weight loss is a s-l-o-w process, but I am game. Ill be the turtle to the hare and will get there I know!

You know what one of the things that is keeping me going?? TRAVEL!! Yup, betcha wouldn’t have guessed 😂 but I have so many adventures around the globe in mind post-pandemic and I want to be ready! Hiking in Nepal, sleeping in Wadi Rum, exploring Patagonia— the list goes on. I’m crossing my fingers the roaring twenties will be here soon enough and I will be there with you actively celebrating!

Have you ever done a big weight loss or health regime? Anyone else on my same mission? I’d love to connect and as always thank you for listening and your support! ☺️
