Creative Prompt: Draw and Tell the Stories of Your Holiday Ornaments and Decorations

Ever since I was a little girl, my mom has kept a wonderful tradition of giving my siblings and I an ornament every year. Typically the ornaments are from a trip my parents have been on or memory from that year. Some of the ornaments were even ones she and I made together (i.e., salt dough ornament in the below photo.) Once we were out on our own, my mom gave us all our ornaments so we could decorate our own tree. That first tree I had in my tiny studio apartment in San Francisco was filled with a lifetime of memories. It was magical!  I knew at that moment I would carry on this tradition with my kids as well.

Fast forward to now, and it seems like the perfect time to capture the stories of each of these ornaments. I may only get a handful of sketches done by Christmas, but I will be sure to tuck this tiny journal in with the ornaments and continue to add to it year after year. As you may guess, this could go on for a while, as I am still getting an ornament a year from my mom!

What stories about your holiday decorations or traditions can you capture in your journal, or create a sketch of?

Be sure to share your stories with me – I can’t wait to see what you create and would love to highlight you in my newsletter!

P.S. Want to know more about salt dough? Here is a blog post I wrote 11 years ago about making ornaments with my kids when they were young!
